Don’t Let Thieves Ride Away: Report Suspicious Bike Activity
Crime Stoppers Queensland is calling on the community to help identify those responsible for a sharp rise in bike thefts, urging residents to be alert to suspicious behaviour and report any relevant information.
CSQ CEO David Hansen stressed that someone in the community knows who is behind these thefts.
“Bike theft isn’t a victimless crime—these bikes often hold great personal and financial value. If someone you know suddenly has a high-end bike they can’t explain, frequently changes bikes, or has multiple bikes stored in unusual places, they could be involved in stolen goods,” said Hansen.
Indicators that someone may be involved in bike theft include:
- A family member, neighbour, or friend with a large number of bikes that seem out of place.
- Someone frequently acquiring new bikes with no clear explanation.
- A person in possession of an expensive bike that doesn’t match their usual lifestyle or means.
- An individual selling bikes at suspiciously low prices or unwilling to provide proof of ownership.
Crime Stoppers is urging anyone who notices these signs and needs to report them anonymously, they can do so via 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestoppersqld.com.au.
Beyond identifying offenders, Hansen is also reminding bike owners to take proactive steps to protect their property.
“One of the best ways to prevent bike theft and increase the chances of recovery is to register your bike with BikeVAULT from DataDot Technology,” he said. “It’s a free and easy way to link your bike to you, making it much harder for thieves to sell stolen bikes and easier for police to return recovered ones.”
“Bike theft is often a crime of opportunity. The more we work together as a community—both by reporting suspicious activity and properly securing our bikes—the less chance these thieves have to operate,” Hansen added.
Brad Kellas, CEO of DataDot Technology, emphasised the importance of proactive registration through BikeVAULT.
“A stolen bike can vanish within hours, making recovery nearly impossible without proper identification,” he said.
“Police across Australia use BikeVAULT to instantly verify if a bike is stolen, so registering your bike is the simplest and most effective step you can take to protect your investment.
“What’s more, you’re not just safeguarding your own bike – you’re helping to shut down the market for stolen bikes. Don’t wait until it’s too late – register today.”
Register your bikes for free at www.bikeVAULT.com.au and make sure to record serial numbers, take photos, and use quality locks when securing your bikes.
